Nephrology Understanding Dialysis When and Why It’s Needed

Dialysis is a crucial treatment for individuals with severe kidney problems. If your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, dialysis can help replace their critical role in filtering waste from your blood. At Shifaa Hospital, we want to explain what dialysis is, when it might be needed, and what you can expect from the process.

What Is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical procedure that performs the essential functions of your kidneys if they are no longer able to do so effectively. It helps remove waste products, excess fluid, and maintain the right balance of electrolytes in your body.

There are two main types of dialysis:

Hemodialysis
Involves using a machine to filter your blood through an artificial kidney (dialyzer). Blood is drawn from your body, cleaned, and then returned.
Peritoneal Dialysis
Uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) as a filter. A special fluid is introduced into your abdomen through a catheter, and waste is removed through this fluid.

Why Is Dialysis Needed?

Dialysis is typically required when your kidneys are functioning at less than 10-15% of their normal capacity, a condition known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. Common causes of kidney failure include:

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Often due to diabetes, hypertension, or glomerulonephritis.
Acute Kidney Injury
Caused by sudden damage to the kidneys, such as from severe dehydration or toxins.

When Should You Consider Dialysis?

You might need dialysis if:

What to Expect During Dialysis?

Hemodialysis

Usually performed three times a week at a dialysis center. Each session lasts about 4 hours. You’ll need to have an access point created in your blood vessels, either through a fistula or a graft.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Can be done at home and typically requires daily exchanges of the dialysis fluid. There are different methods, including continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD).

Living with Dialysis

While dialysis is life-saving, it can also impact your lifestyle. You’ll need to adhere to a specific diet, manage fluid intake, and make regular visits for treatment. Support from healthcare professionals, family, and support groups can make the process smoother.
